Rolls-Royce secures $1.2bn deal with Emirates

Engine maker Rolls-Royce took total new orders for the week to a mouth-watering $3bn (£1.9bn) after Emirates chose the British company to power 50 of its wide-bodied aircraft.Rolls, which bagged a $1.8bn contract with the Chinese on Monday, will supply engines and long term support for Trent 700 engines powering 29 Airbus A330 aircraft and Trent 800 engines powering 21 Boeing 777s. The deal is worth $1.2bn (£760m).Emirates currently owns a fleet of 152 modern, wide-bodied aircraft that fly from of Dubai to 65 countries around the world.The news goes some way to soothing the pain suffered following the recent mid-air engine explosion that forced an Airbus A380 super-jumbos to make an emergency landing in Singapore. An investigation into the engine blast found the failure was confined to the specific component within the Trent 900, which caused an oil fire and the release of the intermediate pressure turbine disc.
