Rolls-Royce picks up $1.8bn engine deal

Rolls-Royce has picked up a morale boosting $1.8bn (£1.1bn) engine order from China just weeks after the problems that grounded Airbus A380 super-jumbos around the world.The order from Air China is not for Trent 900s, the engine that exploded on a Qantas super-jumbo flight, but for Trent XWB and Trent 700 engines.Air China wants the engines to power a total of 20 new aircraft, comprising tenAirbus A350 XWBs and ten A330s. The contract, worth $1.8bn at list prices,includes a TotalCare long-term service agreement.He Li, Air China Ltd Senior Vice President, said: "We look forward to bringingthe Trent XWB into service with our airline to provide us with fuel-efficientpower for the A350 XWB and adding to our Trent 700-powered fleet. We have nowselected this engine on four separate occasions. Our Trent-powered fleet nowstands at 78 aircraft either in service or on order."Rolls has won $4.5bn (£2.8bn) in orders from customers worldwide for the Trent 700 since the start of July, and 75% of orders for A330 engines over the last three years.
