Tate & Lyle jumped over 5% higher after reporting stronger-than-expected first half results with adjusted pre-tax profits of £180m. The sweeteners group said the numbers, which were 10% ahead of what analysts expected, came as a result of strong demand across a number of markets. Panmure Gordon raised its target price on the stock from 615p to 645p.Net written premiums at insurance group RSA rose by 11% from the year before to £6.1bn in the third quarter, with all regions said to be delivering good growth. Shares rose over 4%.Man Group, the FTSE 100 hedge fund manager, has rose strongly after revealing a $150m share buy back programme. Investors seemed not to notice that adjusted pre-tax profits fell 14% in the first half.Telecoms titan BT kept its full-year outlook unchanged after a second quarter performance that reinforced its confidence of hitting its targets. Shares were up 3%.Insurance giant Aviva rose in the afternoon, despite falling into the red early on, as it reported that nine-month sales fell by 5% by the end of September. Not all the figures were as gloomy, however. The key "operating ratio" figure stood at 96% in September, better than the 97% at the same point in 2010.However, it was ITV topped the risers after some positive comments from Credit Suisse ahead of its interim management statement due in the next two weeks.There were only eight stocks registering losses with Unilever and Pearson among them after their updates. Unilever, the giant consumer goods firm behind brands as diverse as TreSemme, PG Tips and Brylcream, fell despite seeing turnover hit €12.1bn in the three months to September.
