Footsie is well down on the day as world economic concerns take the spotlight. The fallers are dominated by mining companies. News that China is trying to dampen down the growth in its economy hit commodities. Disappointing results from aluminium producer Alcoa didn't help, either. Fresnillo, Lonmin, Kazakhmys and Xstrata have all fallen sharply. The falling oil price meant that Tullow Oil and Cairn Energy were also down on the day. Insurers are recovering some of their losses on Monday. RSA Insurance, Aviva, and Standard Life are all higher. Supermarket retailers were boosted by strong figures from Tesco. Wm Morrison Supermarkets is the best performer in the sector.
