Marks & Spencer rose into the top spot on the back of strong food sales during its fourth quarter, and despite a fall in clothing sales. Overall, the period delivered a better-than-expected performance, prompting Investec to say its sees a 'glimmer of hope'. Schroders got a boost from sector peer Ashmore, which was a high riser on the second tier index after reporting that assets under management (AuM) increased by 9.4% in the third quarter as it attracted funds from government clients. Burberry was boosted by the news that China's money supply growth better-than-expected. The country is a big important of consumer goods, particularly high-end. Meanwhile, Evraz shares took a hit after the Russian steelmaker reported a 31% decline in 2012 earnings, after the metal's price dropped and markets became increasingly volatile in the second half of the year. ENRC was lower after the Financial Times reported that the company's Chairman, Mehmet Dalman, could be set to leave following problems with other executives. Dalman issued a statement saying: "I am committed to my current role as chairman of ENRC and continue to have a constructive working relationship with all executive team members." Fellow miners were also seen heading lower, including Fresnillo, Antofagasta, Glencore, Randgold, Anglo American and Polymetal. Xstrata was also down, despite announcing that its Koniambo Nickel project in New Caledonia has gone into production after producing its first metal this week, a key milestone for the $5.0bn greenfield project.
