There has been a fire at one of Chemring's specialist assembly facilities in Tennessee, USA.The defence company, which specialises in energetic materials, such as pyrotechnic, pyrophoric, propellant and explosive materials, said the facility affected is one that is used to perform the final assembly of the MJU-7 flare. The facilities used to manufacture the company's pressed flare, extruded flare, large flare and advanced flare devices as well as the vast majority of expendable decoys made by the company were unaffected by the fire.Chemring said the fire was contained but unfortunately three employees sustained flesh burns in the incident and two were treated for stress.A full and immediate investigation into the cause of the incident has been launched in co-operation with the local regulatory authorities. Subject to agreement with the local regulatory authorities on the exact timing of the production restart, the incident is not expected to have a material impact on the company's 2010 full year results.
